For the Florida Studio Theatre, renovating the nearly century-old Gompertz Theatre and adding a new wing had to be done right. This meant maintaining the classic theme of the old-time performing arts architecture while also incorporating modern technologies and features.

Working alongside architect C. Alan Anderson, NDC Construction undertook the project with a reverence for the past and an eye toward the future.

The old theatre underwent a full renovation, with only the existing exterior walls and roof remaining. Structural remediation was undertaken, including the installation of building foundation grouting/underpinning, new flooring systems, and demolition and structural shoring for new openings within the existing brick exterior walls. Interior refinements brought a new production booth, seating risers, lighting system, and interior finishes.

The 18,000-square-foot addition utilized CMU construction and a stucco veneer to match the existing Gompertz Theatre’s exterior, while ornate wood trim was installed throughout the interior. The new wing features a 130-seat cabaret theatre, a 100-seat lab theatre, dressing rooms, and retail spaces, as well as a kitchen and dining area.

Both the new addition and Gompertz renovation opened on time and within budget, despite the challenges of working in a bustling downtown arts district—thrilling eager audiences ready to attend Florida Studio Theatre’s renowned performances.
